Transitioning from high school to college playing?
Author: alaskaclarinet

Hi! I'm new on this forum, my name is McKenzy and I'm from Alaska.

I was first chair for 2.5 years in high school, and have been picked to play with the college jazz band as well as the wind ensemble when I start in the fall. Does anyone have any tips for the transition? In terms of playing techniques, what to expect, etc. I am at a total loss.

Thank you in advance!

Are you majoring in music? That's a pretty important detail. . .

Practice daily this summer, show up prepared.
Are you studying with a private teacher this summer?
Jazz band on what instrument?

Kroepsch or Baermann III - an hour a day - plus another hour on etudes' or solo literature.

Answer Tyler's question for more help.

The college transition is not difficult, you just need to stay in shape practice wise, and be prepared in the fall. College band is a lot of fun, don't let it worry you.

I think that your first impression will be that everyone around you is as good as you are, or better. You are no longer the high school "standout" and you will need to rise to this new challenge to play with your new peers. So for advice, listen to those around you that will most likely play better that you, learn the new techniques you will need and grow into your new life as a college musician. It will (or should be) the "time of your life" so make the most of it, play well and enjoy. Good luck.
