Instrument Diagrams

Where can I find a chart or diagram that tells me what the various keys and parts of an instrument are named? Is there a source for charts or diagrams of various instruments that tell one what the parts are called? Without going into the details of the various different configurations of Albert, Boehm, etc. systems, just the common everyday configurations. I would really like to have one for flute, one for piccolo, soprano clarinets, sopranino clarinet and alto clarinet.

The keys don't all have special names, at least not when you talk to fellow clarinet players. Nomenclature like "123 123" and "1 and 1" are often used for fingerings, and the other keys tend to be referred to as B/E and F/C for the pinky keys. The trill keys are 1234, or bottom, 2nd from bottom, top, 2nd from top... etc. Those keys don't really have parallel ones on the flute, but do sort of on saxophone.

The Boehm system is supposed to make it easier to move between these instruments, but isn't flawless. Each instrument has its own quirks which require different trill key configurations and corrections.

Hey, thanks for the chart. It is exactly what I was looking for and I've bookmarked it.

Just one more question. Is there really a thing called a "gizmo device" or a "gizmo key" on a flute, and what does it do?

Yes the gizmo key on a flute closes the lowest hole without closing the previous two holes (which happens if you press the low B key). It's only installed on flutes with a B foot joint and facilitates an easier response for high C, possibly some other uses as well.

Different manufacturers may have slightly different nomenclatures.
