 Broadway Books

Is there anyway to get old Broadway books/parts? I'm especially interested in the classics from before the practice of Woodwind I, II, III books, but the old fashioned orchestral setup.

Also, are there limitations in contracts for people in current productions to control the parts and their copyright? We all know the struggle of getting exclusively rental parts. I'm just surprised that things like Showboat haven't made it into the public domain.

Showboat is from 1927 and Jerome Kern died in 1945.

Anything published before 1923 is public domain.

If Kern falls under the "life plus 70" rule, then Showboat will become public domain in 2015.

Unless Disney pays Congress to change the law *again*...

So it's not from the date of publication, it's the date of death?

In the case of Showboat, wouldn't the copyright clock start running after the 1960 death of Oscar Hammerstein II, rather than the 1945 death of Jerome Kern? That would push the PD date to 2030 (or 2050, if the "life plus 90" rule applies).

How do you access the sheet music once you've done a search on the Paramount Theater Music Library website? I typed in Carousel and it said it had it, but the site didn't provide a link to access the music. Obviously, I'm missing something:(

It seems as though you contact them and they copy the music for you and send it out.

Or, if this was a work for hire, a different set of rules:

95 years from the date of publication or 120 years from the
date of creation, whichever expires first.

The Paramount Theater Music Library also has some links to other sources:
