 Kreutzer no. 37. HELP!!!
Author: as9934

I just received my solo for 11-12 all state band for the 14-15 school year and it's rodolphe kreutzer's no. 37. It is probably the most technically difficult thing I have ever played and so I need a lot of help. What tips do you guys have? Does anyone have a recording (I couldn't find one on youtube)?

Kreutzer's Etude 37 in IMSLP http://imslp.org/wiki/%C3%89tudes_ou_caprices_%28Kreutzer,_Rodolphe%29 is unplayable on clarinet, since it calls for extensive double-stopping and counterpoint on separate strings.

Kreutzer is in the public domain, so you can scan the piece and attach it to a message. We can comment only when we see the music.

Unfortunately I only have my phone until friday so I will post the piece then. Until then I will try describe the piece to see if anyone has heard/played it. The piece is in A major and consists of all slur two tounge two sixteenth notes. It is titled number 37 so perhaps is out of some sort of methods or etudes book. I did run a google search for the piece and turned up nothing.

Is it Rose 40 Etudes # 37 http://www.clarinetinstitute.com/94786/88291/Rose%20Studies.htm?

If so, you prepare for it by working through the A major and E major pages in Baermann 3 to get the feel of the scales and arpeggios into your finger memory. Since the etude modulates all the way to F# major, you must be comfortable in B and F#, too.

The tempo marking is only 112, so, despite the continuous 16ths, it's a relaxed and lyrical piece. Pushing the tempo to 126 or so will tangle your fingers and destroy the feeling of the music.

Clarinetists need to breathe, unlike violinists, so you must find appropriate breathing places. Usually, you leave out the second sixteenth note of a measure where the chord changes. Violinists often play over these points, ignoring the harmony. As a breathing musician, you actually have an advantage. Take a tiny bit of extra time if you need to, or even leave out two sixteenths. Beware of stringing phrases together without breaths. If you play 16 measures without a breath, you're in trouble. Take many small breaths, even if you don't really need to.
