 Footlifters-Incredible Columbia All Star Band
Author: Ed

I was looking up some recordings of marches and remembered this session that was released in the 70's. This is a must have for any fan of the genre. It was entitled Footlifters-A Century of American Marches, conducted by Gunther Schuller. The band was credited as the Incredible Columbia All Star Band.

It truly was an all star session and featured a who's who of NY players at the time.

Harvey Phillips All Star Band? (I had an album with that name - pretty much same players.)

Had Vince Abato playing the Tchk. Violin Concerto 3rd Mvt.

Great stuff. Also, the Detroit Concert Band has a CD set of all 116 Sousa Marches, and another 5 CD set called Gems of the Concert Band. Lenard Smith was the director.
available from Walking Frog Records. ( Smith made available the solo clarinet part for each of the Sousa marches .So, I played along with them )

That was a great group, for sure.

The great true symphonic bands of Northwestern, the University of Illinois, University of Michigan and the Eastman School of Music (really a wind ensemble without the depth of a 100 member symphonic band) are the Gold Standard for the traditional breadth of resonance and power.

And their clarinet sections kicked ass on the transcription literature avoided today.
