 Good second hand A clarinets
Author: samsmash

Hello all!

I've played the clarinet for 7 years now and I just did my grade 8 a few months ago (got 139 woop!) and I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for good A clarinets - preferably slightly older models that I could get for under £1000 as I'm playing more and more orchestral music for clarinet in A (also I really want to play Brahms' trio).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated (and links to any for sale in the UK if possible).

Thanks

139 is excellent! I got 135 for my Grade 8.

Have a look to see what Clarinets Direct has on offer:

Howarth have several but they're all over £1000:

Also check eBay as they often have A clarinets listed on there. Check the French and German (and other European countries) listings as well - I found my Series 9 full Boehm A clarinet in Vienna.

You might check the secondhand list at John Myatt.

Are they still in business?

I've seen several pairs of B&H Emperors going for a song at well under £1000.

Audition a brand new Lyrique A for around $1200. No harm done (except maybe a few $ shipping) if you don't love it. And if you decide to keep it, you've saved a chunk of change. Your only problem might be liking it better than your Bb.

On ebay, you can find some NOBLET (40 and 45) clarinet in A.
