 dating my Leblanc alto
Author: beek4000

Hello,

I recently obtained a vintage Leblanc PARIS alto clarinet, serial #6659. I'm trying to determine how old it might be. Can anyone give me an estimate?

Thanks!

I make it 1977.

Thank you, Tony! 1977 seems like a good year! Were you able to obtain this date from an online source?

I have a Leblanc serial number list, picked up a reference to it some years back on this bb.

Tony, that list only seems to identify Noblet alto clarinets - do you know if the professional models used the same serial list?

Hi Norman,
I've never come across one of the professional models, so I can't really say. Perhaps someone on the bb who has one can check their serial number against this list.

Hello Tony,

I have seen this list. Thanks nonetheless for sharing it. If my alto was a Noblet, its serial number would indeed date it back to 1977. My horn bears no model $. All I know is that it's a Leblanc PARIS. I have not had any luck tracking down an exact date of manufacture.

The subject line gave me some odds images of dating an Alto clarinet, such as taking it to a fine resturant... :-)

Nah, you can take an alto to a dive bar. It's those sopranos who are divas.

I have no issue with taking my alto out for a nice dinner, as I suspect she may be eligible for the senior discount. And so I ask again, how old might she be?

Just boppin' around on Google for a few minutes, best guess is the model number is 7165 and the manufacture date is 1971.

Same year as my Fiat 850 Spider (who is very cute and would be a fun date).

The shape of the Leblanc logo can give a rough idea of vintage (see clarinetperfection website for pictures) but broadly in the 50s the logo was a diamond shape with slightly squared points and with the name G Leblanc all on one line.
From about late 50s to late 60s the same shape logo but with the G placed on a line above Leblanc.
From late 60s onwards the diamond shape became virtually a rectangle with only a hint of bevel at each side.

beek4000... "I have no issue with taking my alto out for a nice dinner."

Well, if you take her to one of those quaint restaurants with stuff hanging from the walls, be careful not to stare at another alto clarinet. Could be trouble.
