Try here for a start on your search for information on Pernzel Muellers. http://www.clarinetpages.net/system/app/pages/search?scope=search-site&q=Penzel . They are appreciated by more than a few as being an undervalued, vintage instrument.

thnx for the reference, I have read Phil's reviews.
I was more interested in opinion of people who own/owned and things they like/dislike and what they think is the most fitting place for each.
For example Artist sounds light and jazzy, and eager to bend pitch. Empire is dark and good for chamber music, etc etc

I've had all three models in my hands at various times, all are solidly built and pretty high quality vintage instruments.
Based on the initial play tests of all three instruments (i.e., only the particular instrument I had in my hands, as it's hard to generalize), I refurbished only the 1940's vintage Artist as not delivered for me pretty solidly in terms of tone, intonation, and the flexibility I wanted from a larger bore horn. I played that horn for a couple of years before selling it.
The Empire was good but not great in my opinion in terms of tone and intonation (at least the one I was fiddling with in the condition it was in), and while I liked the Brilliante and thought it had promise (nice tone, ergos, a more professional and classical instrument) once fully overhauled, I ultimately decided that I thought another brand of horn would be better for my needs and for the refurb price.
I like Penzel Muellers, and have had quite a few, but have now sold all but one. Good luck! They can be great horns depending on what you're looking for.

Brad, thnx for comments.
If I may ask what didn't you like about Brilliante? It didn't fit music you play? intonation? tone? or just something better came by?
I have 2 Artists and Empire. Empire is dead on center intonation-wise and lovely dark tone, but it doesn't project. Artist is nice and we love it but it's too jazzy for classical. Was hoping Brilliante would fit in-between.

The Brilliante was fine (well, as far as I could tell), but I felt like a Selmer Series 9* was better for the classical playing I do most often. Faced with similar refurb costs, and only the ability to play both in their current "needs work" state, I chose the Selmer.
The Brilliante was good, though. It may just do what you need it to.
