Really I think of myself as an actor who speaks through the violin, and when I encounter a new piece I have to find the right tone of voice, the right way to 'speak’. That is the difference between performers and composers. Composers are always themselves, whereas we have to be different every time.” --

Try listening to Zehetmair's recording. I've been a fan of this piece for 40 years, and only recently came across this unconducted version with the Northern Sinfonia.

Zehetmair's calculatedly hyper-romantic, gestural style, set against a neoclassical background, now seems to me to show the work in an even more convincing light.

I've heard the same said of Reginald Kell's version of the Three Pieces. But I think (if I'm not mistaken) it's been said that Stravinsky liked his interpretation.

I don't want to get into a conversation with you, Paul, really. That sort of interaction never goes anywhere here.

But, for the sake of everyone else: do you see that 'the same' in Paul's "the same said of Reginald Kell's version of the Three Pieces", totally fails to capture what is so about Zehetmair's performance as against Kell's puny effort?

The two are totally different in both intention and effect, as anyone listening with a score can hear.

I just saw this scorching review of a recent Tetzlaff performance. These music critics sure are harsh!
