 Bonade's female students

"Ha! You think that's so great. I just had a young woman come in here and play completely through the entire Stark Arpeggio Studies in ONE lesson without a mistake!".

This was a statement from Greg Smith from Daniel Bonade in response to Robert Marcellus playing the Jeanjean 18 in two lessons.

Just curious who this student may have been. I do not recall hearing of any female students that Bonade had. Wouldn't someone have noticed that talent despite any sexist attitudes that may have existed?

Though not at the same level, I recall Clark Brody mentioning that he had only ONE student read through the first Stark Arpeggio exercise without a mistake. This person was also a female.

I think though that analytical perfection and musicianship are two different things. The people who do these perfect readings may not necessarily "make it" in the profession. Having noted that Marcellus did this sort of thing is saying something entirely different. I hope that makes sense.

Could it possibly be Mary Jungerman? In "A Biographical Dictionary of Twentieth-Century American Clarinetists" by Tracey Lynn Paddock (Florida State University), Jungerman is listed as one of Daniel Bonade's students.

It was the Jeanjean 16 Moderne - the first and then the second eight in two successive weekly lessons. RM was just under 20 yrs of age while second clarinettist in the Washington Nat'l Symphony.

Evidently Bonade didn't mind attempting to "tame young bucks" whom he thought were being a bit precocious.

Of course the musical demands of the Jeanjean 16 Moderne are in a completely different realm than that of the Stark and I think that both Bonade and Marcellus (who were later to become the closest of friends) both understood the poke in it's proper context.
