 Would like new Mouthpiece
Author: Ben Shaffer

I have a Vito Plastic horn with an R60 mouthpiece It sounds good to my beginners ear, but I'm thinking I would like to upgrade to another mouthpiece. Any suggestions? I don't want to pay a lot as I am a casual Player. Ive heard the Hite mouthpieces are pretty popular

Try the Clark Fobes Debut. I bought one for a student of mine. They play and sound very nice.

The Hite Premier is extremely good at a very modest price.

I don't mean to imply that your contemplating a new mouthpiece to be a bad idea by the following, but can you share what motivations lie behind your desire to switch mouthpieces? To rephrase, and independent of whether it's doable, what realistic change are you hoping for with a mouthpiece switch? What doesn't the R60, to your mind, do for you?

Fobes Debut or Vandoren 5RV-Lyre
Play 2 of each at a music store, buy the one you like best.
Don't forget your tuner when testing mouthpieces.

Search the threads - although searching on 'mouthpiece' might crash the servers - a very common topic here.

The R60 is a Riffault stencil, and probably worth to be refaced. I have a friend who have a refaced one, and it plays wery well with an even, well balanced sound. It may turn out to be a much better mouthpiece than the 'student models'. However, if you would like to buy a beginner model, I would suggest the Behn Overture. It has the same blank as the Fobes Debut and the Hite Premiere, but I like the facing of the Overture more, because you can use it with a lighter reed, and still have a good focus to the sound.

Disclaimer: I have nothing to gain from saying the Behn Overture is 'better' than other student models, and this is only my opinion, based on my experience.

If you have about $40 to spend try these:
Behn Overture
Fobes Debut
Hite Premiere

If you have about $100 to spend try these:
Rico Reserve X5 (there is also an X0 and X10 model)
Vandoren M15 (there is also a M13 Lyre and M30 model)

There are many many more options, but these are in my opinion a good place to start.

While you're checking out mouthpieces, you might also want to check out ligatures as well. Also a popular topic here.

Ditto on the Fobes Debut or Hite Premier ... Fobes is more consistent but the Hite (if you find a good one) has better sound IMHO. Both use the same blank.

Also, Tom Ridneour makes some good student MPs ... His RE-5 and RE-10 are hand faced, I think. Darker sound.

Good luck!

The Fobes Debut works very well with a Vito clarinet--that's what I use for "beer tent" gigs and strolling-ensemble performances. It plays great, doesn't cost much, and I can get easily get a replacement if mine gets damaged.

The Ridenour Encore is also an excellent choice. It offers a darker, more focused tone quality--and is more resistant--than the Fobes Debut. It also offers very accurate tuning on the two Vito models I have tested it with (7214 and V-40).

I have mouthpieces that cost much more than the Fobes Debut and Ridenour Encore that don't play nearly as well. Both are exceptional values.
