Which reeds work best for you on the 5RV Lyre, M13 or M30?

Which reeds do you use/like, if you are using one of these mouthpieces?

- 5rv lyre
- M15
- M30

I'm not after a "one reed fits all". I understand that a 5RV Lyre might work best with one reed and M30 with a different reed strength. If you use one of the above MPs, which reed to you find to work best for you for that particular MP?

I have used Nr 4 Rue Lepic on all three, with not so great results on the M30 (everyone says the 3 1/2 V12 are the way to go for the M30).

I use a Vandoren blue box 3 on my M30. A 3.5 would probably be ok too but I like soft reeds.

Would like to try M30 and M30D ...

Use regular cut Legere 3-3.25 on a M30-lyre ... ordered some Legere Signatures.

I used V12, #3.5 on my 5RV-lyres. I later sent a pair to David Mclune for refacing and internal work and they came back totally different animals with better articulation and a deeper sound. I continued with the V12 #3.5s.

I'm using 3 1/2 and 3 1/2+ V12s with my M30. I keep going back and forth between those two strengths.

Thanks for all the feedback. I ended up ordering a box each of:
Rue lepic 3
Rue Lepic 3.5+
Rue Lepic 4

I already have:
Vandoren 1.5 (the very first box I got 3 months ago)
Rico #2
a couple of Vandoren 2.5
V12 3.5

Pretty soon I can open a reed shop.

I'm not 100% sure between V12 and RLP but I noticed the V12s get this "dark" thing in the heart of the reed after a while whereas the RLPs don't seem to.

I've also learned about rubbing the top of the reeds to try to "seal" the fibres and minimise this. Not sure if it works or not...

And.... once I've figured out the ideal MP + reed..... I'll try synthetics next :D

BTW if you like Rues try Rico Grand Concerts evolutions.. Grand Concerts ~1/4 stiffer then VD for the same strength.

Thanks! I'm not sure I "get" the "comments" column. Sure it says something there but I don't really know what it really means

So I guess I'll just try it and see. The one that says "Exceptional quality of sound" sounds nice... :D

I think I need to properly understand the terminology and for that I think it's best to start yet another topic

I'm not sure what the "'dark' thing" is - it sounds like a reed that's gotten waterlogged after being played for too long in an early session.

There are definite differences in the profile that you can't see so easily if at all, and one difference that you can see easily - the bark where the vamp of the reed begins. V12s are cut straight across (called variously "file-cut," "filed," "double-cut" or "French-cut." 56 Rues are left with a half moon-shaped end to the bark (like Rico Reserve Classics and Gonzalez F.O.F.). This has a definite affect on the vibration of the reed. Obviously, there are players on both sides of that preference. But every major reed manufacturer I've tried offers reeds with each kind of cut, which can narrow your decisions once you know which you prefer.
