Greetings!

I am a student Clarinet player and I have a few questions. I have a Vandoren 5RV Lyre Mouthpiece that I absolutely adore, but I just recently noticed a few things. One, there are scratches on the face (I think it's called), as seen in the first picture in the album. Two, there is a little nick literally RIGHT next to the rail on the right. It's not touching it, however it is still right there (Found in pics 2-4). And three, there are very small scratches on the inside of the mouthpiece, I don't know it this is normal or not. What I'd like to know though, is this mouthpiece in working condition. As in, is the sound effected by these?

That out of the way, what reed brand (Preferably V12's) and strength would you recommend to go along with this mouthpiece. I currently use V12 3's, but someone said the tone sounded slightly "blown out" I guess you could say. Thanks in advance!

What you describe as scratches do not appear to be scratches per se to me. IMO they are vestiges of some kind of internal molding "flow" pattern. My personal feeling is that you purchased this mp used....or that you have used one of those bristle brushes to clean it......or both.

Nothing from the images appears to have the property of disturbing the basic sound of the mouthpiece. What does affect the playing ability would be large nicks or gauges on the flat part of the side rails or tip rail.

The real measurements that affect sound are only made clear with gauges and would not be visible upon cursory inspection.

Bottom line though, if it plays well just keep playing on it !!

The "scratches" inside the mouthpiece are actually scratches indeed - they come from when the mouthpiece finisher or refacer adjusted (i.e. filed, sanded etc) the baffle and the interior walls to bring the mouthpiece to specs or to make it "sing".
Hence the subtle variations from one mouthpiece to the other, especially the "hand made" beaks.

Don't worry about the scratches. Worry about the intonation and tone. If it plays good, it IS good.

Well, there is something to be said for detecting the affect on sound with our ears by listening.

But I understand what you were saying.

Excepting those slight (I think inconsequential) scratches on the table, the markings, from what I can see in the picture, look like the result of someone's handwork in the baffle trying to improve the factory result in some way.
