 Dan Higgins's clarinet
Author: Bruno
Date:   2014-03-09 20:37

Anybody know for sure what clarinet Dan Higgins plays? Sounds like a Buffet, but in the videos it seems to have a second metal ring down near the lower joint connection with the bell.

The guy's a great player!!

Looks like it may have been banded to fix a crack.

I seem to remember reading long ago that he plays a R13. And, btw, he is a legendary Hollywood studio musician who doubles equally on most woodwinds, not just a clarinetist.

Speaking of Hollywood musician legends, did anyone catch Vic Flick of last night's Pawn Stars episode? He sold his Fender Stratocaster to the guys for $70,000.

All R13s have a ring at the top of the bell. There's nothing unusual about his clarinet.

His playing, however, is outa sight.

I realize that, Ken, but my old eyes saw at first glance what appeared to be a second ring. On second glance it seem that it was just a result of poor picture quality and the said old eyes. You're spot on about his playing, he makes it seem so effortless.

I've watched all of his videos. In perhaps 4 of them he plays clarinet and there is definitely a second ring just above where the bell joins the lower joint. Of course there is a ring at the top of the bell (as there is on nearly every make of clarinet), but that's not the one I'm talking about.

"If it's got keys, Dan Higgins can play it." is what people around LA say.

His alto sax playing is wonderful. Even if he didn't play a speck of jazz his sound is very appealing.

Bruno -

Which videos show the extra ring?

And BTW, Dan's soprano playing is sensational. No nasal oboe sound, perfectly in tune - the guy's a virtuoso!

Dan normally plays an R13. He also plays a Selmer BT. I'm not sure which clarinet he is playing on this video. The mouthpiece could be an older Kanter, newer Kanter, or Kaspar. He plays Vandoren V12 reeds.
In addition to playing all of the saxophones and flutes incredibly well, he plays guitar and harmonica. And he is a fine arranger, also.
That is his son Dustin on Guitar.

The quality of the video is very bad but in spite of it, from what is possible to see, there is no extra ring above the normal bell socket ring or anywhere else.

My best guess is that what you might think is an extra ring is actually the E/B key. That's the only thing that can look like an extra ring, because of the terrible video quality.

On his site he lists his set up

FWIW- it was mentioned it sounds like a Buffet. I don't know that I could tell the brand of clarinet from listening. What I CAN tell however is that it is terrific playing.

That's his brother, Dustin Higgins!

P.S. Dan's not playing the Selmer.

P.P.S. Whoever said that what I mistook for a second ring on Dan's clarinet is actually the E/B key is absolutely right. (smacks forehead!)

@ Bruno:
I live in Los Angeles and have known Dan for over 35 years; and have had the good fortune to work and perform with him for much of that time.
Dustin is his son- I have the pleasure of working with both of them with the Arturo Sandoval Big Band.
You are likely correct about the R13, the BT has german silver keys which do not shine-

Well Greg, his "son' looks nearly as old as Dan himself. A commenter on one of their "jams" corrected another for saying that Dustin is Dan's son.
I guess his info, like mine, is incorrect.

(later) OMG! Dustin IS Dan's son! He mentioned him in an interview.
and get this, Dan felt that he himself had to take some guitar lessons along with Dustin. Otherwise, how could he talk intelligently about Eb7th flat 9th, etc.?
