Hi All

I recently found an K48516 Evette Schaeffer Buffet Crampon made in France. I am interested in purchasing this instrument. Would you advise it or should I look for something else?

I would play it or have someone that is really good play it, paying special attention to tuning and also a good technician should take a look and give you an estimate on bringing it into perfect playing shape ...

Even if it is really cheap, not much point buying something and having to put several hundred dollars in repairs. Money would be better spent on a Backun Alpha or one of Tom Ridenour's instruments, either should be very good ...

Tom

I have a similar one that I bought for my middle school child and have used as a back-up instrument for myself. While not a professional grade instrument, it is certainly a good intermediate instrument (and substantial step up from most plastic student instruments). My son (using the same mouthpiece) definitely sounds better his E & S than on his plastic instrument. That said, with any used instrument purchase, you'll need to make sure it is in good repair. If not able to have it checked out like TomS wisely recommends, you should probably budget the cost of a complete overhaul. I've spent anything from $0-$150 to get used instruments into working condition.

I've had Evette Schaeffer clarinets that played every bit as well as a good R-13, but they are as inconsistent as their more expensive brother.

Research their acoustics in comparison to the R-13. That may help you make your decision.
