A New Take on the First Movement Clarinet Soli in Schumann Piano, London Symphon
Author: williamalex54

Note how the first movement clarinet solo at 16 minutes is played.

I dare some of you to do this without telling the conductor!

recorded just a few days ago (I think!) at the Barbican in London.

Whats wrong with Andrew's playing? I've only played this once so I could be wrong but don't recall the arpeggios. I wouldn't be surprised if John Eliot Gardener has found a version such as a first draft that has this.

Nothing is wrong with it at all unless you happen to be opposed to changing what is commonly done! I just thought there would be some interest about the way he played it.

Fair enough. With that conductor though its about playing what the composer wrote so that version must exist. LSO sound great as usual.

My recollection is that most editions do not have these arpeggios. I rather like them as they reinforce the arpeggios in the solo part.

However, it sounds to me that the descending arpeggios in the clarinet may be just a bit late/slow, at least the first time. Does anyone else hear this?

That is certainly an interesting take on the section at 16min, and I also have never heard it played like that or indeed seen the dots notated that way.

More interesting is Andrew's dialogue with the pianist (who is excellent) at around 18:30. He certainly is in his element in terms of interpretation, musicality tone and projection. A great moment.

I was looking forwards to hearing Andrew play the opening of the 2nd movement of the symphony, though Chris Richards took on that role and played it very well in any case.

It's the first version of the Concerto. There are other differences too, the most striking one being that the piano BEGINS the piece ("Ta-dah, Bang!" rather than "Bang! Ta-dah":-) But they don't do that here; perhaps the pianist felt it was a step too far...backwards.

I played this version with Gardiner's ORR and Malcolm Bilson on period instruments around 15 years ago, and we made a DG recording; but it was never issued.

I recall that the reversed opening reminded me of a rather silly and painful joke: what's the difference between the man who falls from the first floor of an apartment building, and the man who falls from the seventh floor?

Answer: the first man goes, Bang!..."AAAAAGH" and the second, "AAAAAGH!"...Bang!

I told this joke to my colleagues in the break, with the result that when we played it again, everyone convulsed with laughter. "What's the matter with all of you?" snapped Gardiner.

When they said it was a joke I'd told, Gardiner demanded to hear it. "Well, _I_ don't think that's particularly funny," he then said. (He's someone who prefers the jokes to be made by him.)

Still, when we played it again, it was HE who burst out laughing...

And yet the recording was never issued.

"And yet," no, it wasn't.

(How did you know that?)

Actually, it was probably because there were many things wrong with the setup: the DG sound engineers came in for a lot of criticism from conductor, soloist and orchestra and I suppose the end result just wasn't good enough.

It's a pity, because different versions of well-known pieces are worth having.

Another good example is Mendelssohn's revised version of the Italian symphony. I found playing that really weird, because it sounded to me for a long time like an EARLIER version of what we now consider a masterpiece. Yet, Mendelssohn wasn't satisfied. All movements apart from the first are completely recomposed.
