Hi,
I've found a wood clarinet and I'm having trouble identifying it - mostly because my experience is only in a few wood Yamahas from the past 3 decades and resin models.
Metal tenon rings/sleeves on all joints is the only notable feature I can detect.
Strangest thing, for me, is the case which looks oldish (60s-70s?) that is quite large but not actually fitted with any/many slots for kit and oddly has the barrel connected with the upper joint. A refurbished case?
The seller says that they can't find a model/serial stamp and that the case is 'original' but that's hard to take seriously since they know next to nothing about the instrument.
Pics attached.
Any knowledge would be appreciated.

The keywork (side trills) suggests it's a Leblanc-style instrument. Could be a Vito France, could be a "proper" Leblanc, could be a Normandy, could be a Noblet.
The case looks like a reworked trumpet case or somesuch. Not original, I'd say.

Thanks Ben, I was thinking Leblanc or Noblet but not Vito or Normandy.
The case is odd and now you mention it probably wide enough for a cornet or trumpet.

It looks like Normandy or Noblet, but something about the way the keys are sculptured isn't right. I'll do some research.

The clarinet looks Leblanky, but not exactly so. I have one quite similar, which is (I think) an early Hanson in hard rubber. Mine has no markings other than a Sonata decal. The case is pure Boosey and Hawkes, I have several identical ones which originally contained Emperors

The keywork and bell flare look like that of a Noblet-made Jeffrey to me. But the metal tenon caps would not be found on a Jeffrey.
Perhaps Leblanc USA sold Jeffreys under the Holton brand...and the Holton logo or logos have worn off of this example. The Vito-sourced Holton clarinets had a decal logo which away easily during the period in which the Jeffrey was in production.

Thanks Tony & Ursa for your input.
A Leblacy/Noblet stencil sounds about right I think
Actually at this point I most interested in seeing any photo of a identical or similar case. Tony, would you mind putting up a photo of one of your B&H Emperor cases? Google wants nothing of the sort to turn up for me in Image Search, so I'm very curious indeed.
Thanks,
V

Thank you Tony - amazing the things one learns here!
Well, the clarinet definitely isn't a Boosey Emperor but the case is - I might rescue this one from obscurity out of interest's sake.
Thanks all,
V

Hi,
I was thinking of doing the same, but it's your bird. Good luck.

The Malerne clarinet company made clarinets for a variety of brands. If there is no identifying stamp on the instrument, it could have been a label that fell off. Malerne used labels instead of stamps for several retailers. If one sees "France" stamped at the bottom of one of the joints, this could lead one to Malerne consideration.
Malerne actually made a pretty decent instrument.

The normal giveaway for Malerne stencils is the up-tilted pad arm just below the centre joint, which this one does not have, so I don't think it's a Malerne. That being said, I don't really know what it is.

Not a Malerne. The keywork is wrong for a Malerne. It is right for a Vito, Normandy or Noblet - see the top trill key e.g.
