Good afternoon,
Is there any place to learn jazz for clarinet, in Hong Kong.
I play on my own, but I would like to take lesson, hopefully play with other musicians, and may be present the grades in the Trinity college syllabus.
Does the HK government has such classes?
With thanks and regards,
Wafaic

There are a couple of free on-line music courses that might help you.
One is offered by the Conservatory of Hong Kong on classical harmony. It started only last week, so you would still be in time to catch up. The other is by Gary Burton of the Berklee school of music in Boston on jazz harmony, which I think is coming back soon. Both courses are available through www.coursera.org. Apart from that, there's an interesting talk on You Tube by the clarinettist Victor Goines https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-l-WbBfL28k
about the history of jazz clarinet. Hope this helps.

Learning to play jazz is best done by attending the University of the Ear. It's like swimming....you can read about all the techniques and theory, but sink when you first jump in the lake. Listen to every example of jazz--and there are many different styles--and then, take a simple tune (I like, "When the Saints go Marching In"), learn it by ear...no music....and then, play what you've discovered with some original variations which you invent. You can do this solo or with a chordal accompaniment. This will help you develop a relative sense of pitch memory which is essential--knowing what fingerings produce what pitches, etc. Also, having a "tool box" of scales and arpeggios is essential, with a book and then memorized, is also a must. But the most important thing......LISTEN, LISTEN and then, LISTEN AGAIN. In fact, never stop listening...and learning. Good luck....jazz isn't for sissies.
