Hello,
Well it is done.
I have ordered a Yamaha 255.
Elements 2000 book1 with cd rom
one box of rico orange and one box of rico reserve classic. Both 2 1/2
does anyone know if the reserve classic is French or American cut?
With blowing on the mouthpiece only, what note should I get?
It is a Yamaha plastic 4c.
With the mouthpiece installed on the clarinet, what note should I get when blowing
in the clarinet without pressing any keys?
I am assuming that there is an actual note when not pressing any keys.

The note you would get is a G. Here is a clarinet Fingering Chart I think you will find handy.

but that G will sound like an F on the piano or tuner, because your Bb clarinet sounds two semitones lower than what's written/fingered.

With just the mouthpiece, you should get a D (concert C) two octaves above middle C on the Piano.

You can get a note without a reed on a clarinet mouthpiece, too. Hold the mouthpiece sideways with the empty reed lay facing upwards and blow across it, as if you were playing a transverse flute. And then wish you'd used ear plugs.

Start with a mouthpiece and barrel only. You should see F# on the tuner. (set to a-440).

Someone mentioned D concert C
Since mouthpiece are usually listed as playing A 440 or A 442 I just thought that
you would get that note when played alone with the reed.
I will try both, with the barrel and without.
The reason I also want to know which note the mouthpiece and reed is suppose to
give me alone is simply that I will also be practicing this way at first.
So that I may learn to get the appropriate note on mouthpiece only.

You will get many pitches blowing on just the mouthpiece, depending on how much pressure you put on the reed with your lower lip, how hard you blow and many other factors that, as a beginner, you have not yet learned to control.
It's supposed to be that way. The flexibility makes it easy (and even possible) for the reed to vibrate at different pitches depending on which holes you cover.
All that counts is the pitch you get when you have the clarinet put together. And even that will change as you build up strength in your embouchure muscles.
By the way, I started out on a number 1-1/2 orange box Rico (when then came in a brown box). The Yamaha 4c mouthpiece is fairly open, so a 2-1/2 may be too stiff for you at the beginning.
Beyond generalities, there's not much any of us can do to help. You really need to find someone who plays the clarinet to help you through the initial steps. There are many things a beginner can do wrong, and only someone who can see and hear you can help.

I got my clarinet yesterday.
Reality now starts....has started.
