 Great Brahms Concert
Author: Ken Shaw 2017

Yesterday's all-Brahms concert in the Concertgebouw by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (Violin Concerto and Symphony #2), conducted by Bernard Haitink, is at least temporarily available at http://www.concertgebouw.nl/live. Yes, there are clarinet solos, but the big deal is how alive the orchestra is, with everybody involved all the time (as compared with the lumps in the audience). They're so responsive that Haitink sometimes conducts just with his eyebrows.

The wonderful violin soloist is Janine Jansen. She looks calm and collected while she's not playing, but the moment she starts, a tiger leaps out. The big oboe solo in the second movement is played by maybe the best oboist alive, the Australian player Diane Doherty. I'm not sure who the principal clarinetist is. He's not the one listed at the COE's website. He has a slightly unusual embouchure and plays great.

Watch full-screen to see the orchestra's interaction and unanimity. It's a lesson for us all.

I agree a great concert indeed! You may also be interested in another live concert with Haitink and the Boston Symphony Orchestra where he conducts the Brahms violin concerto with another great oboist John Ferrillo.

Thank you! Any time Haitink comes to France, it is a red-letter day for audiences and musicians alike. Years after the concert, the orchestral musicians involved still speak about it with great warmth. He is elderly now: going on 85, but the artistry is still there.
