 Jazz mouthpiece ?
Author: Jimmy Noone

So I want to join the jazz band of my school and apparently I will be the only clarinet since the band always refused clarinets. But now that puts a big pressure on me, because not only I will be the first clarinet who joins the jazz program but I will have to master all the contra high notes (highest notes) and will have to achieve playing with a fluid tone. So maybe you guys know good jazz mouthpieces for clarinet. I know that's a very personal choice but I need some good opinions to chose from. Perhaps you guys have experienced similar situations :) .

Thank you.

Clark Fobes makes great mouthpieces, and he has a jazz model... Nearly any mouthpiece can be used for jazz. Usually it is a wide tip mouthpiece with a softer reed, but some play great jazz on closed mouthpieces with harder reeds. Like you said its very personal. Sorry I'm not more help with this subject.

Jimmy Noone, are you related to your famous namesake? I suspect not.

If you could find out his particular set-up though, you'd be well on your way.

Here's a website and some information on this fabulous player - scroll down about half way. http://jazzlives.wordpress.com/tag/albert-system-clarinet/

By the way, there are numerous postings about this subject on this website. I normally would not reply to posts such as this because of this fact...but you have such an interesting name.

Acker Bilk played on B45.
Many greats (including Benny) played on Selmer HS*

It's personal, but I'm playing jazz on a Vandoren CL5 mouthpiece. It's plenty loud enough and hits the high notes with ease. Apart from that, I've had a lot of fun with an Otto Link MP.

I have a trio that plays early jazz, blues and ragtime. Jimmie Noone is my ideal, especially the Apex Club stuff with the clarinet/alto duets. I play a Boehm instrument with a Pyne ~M mouthpiece. I hesitate to recommend it because it seems unreasonably expensive, but other brands will have a similar geometry, fairly open. I tried the Vandoren jazz model 5JB - it is so open I can't play it with any reed. My sound has become beautifully antique, and I attribute that as much to embouchure adjustment as to setup.

"I tried the Vandoren jazz model 5JB - it is so open I can't play it with any reed""

That's interesting John. I used this MP for years and years with a Rico reed 3+1/2. But now I use a Meyer *8 (I think it is) with a Rico 3 reed.

I have no idea if this is the same, overall, or otherwise...a MP and reed expert amongst us would probably know...it is easier to play though.

Can I hear your trio via Youtube or other means?

cheers,

JK

Here are three very reasonably priced suggestions.....Brilhart Ebolin #4 or #5 @27 dollars... Yamaha 6c @ 26 dollars. Also Yamaha hard rubber #3 @ 39 dollars..... Buy all three and pick the best,
