I currently own a Yamaha 250 student clarinet am looking for a replacement. I am in 10th grade and am the principal clarinetist of the second band my school. I also play in a small orchestra at my church. We don't have a huge budget so I would like to stay under $500. I saw some used e13's and e12's on eBay for about that price. What do you think about these clarinets? Do you have any other suggestions? I just recently played the new e12f, an e11, a Leblanc bliss, and Antigua backun, and a buffet limite and I liked the sound of the e12f the best. Is there a big difference between the e12f and the old e12s, and e13s?

I haven't seen the E12F yet. It may be the replacement for the E-11 France. The E-11 France was a wooden clarinet with glued in posts. These didn't stay glued in.

The E13 is a very popular intermediate grade clarinet in the UK and my experience with repair work indicates they are as well made as the R13s.
Only regular problem is the tendency for binding tenons (both E13 and R13) but with a well used instrument that problem should have been sorted earlier in it's life.
The E13 is in my view a much better clarinet than the E11 (German or French made.)

If you are referring to the German made E-11, that is the same instrument that has been around for many years and was sold concurrently with the E-11 France. I'm confused because that model has silver keys. The plastic models, B10 & B12 come with nickel keys. The E-11 in Bb is missing from their web site but it was in my last dealer catalog.
I just had an E-12F in the shop today for a quick repair. It appeared to have leather pads.

EF-12's are excellent.
However, you won't get one for $500.
Save up for an R13.

The German Made E11N (with nickel keys) only brings back the original E11 that was German made with silver keys. The E11N was made concurrently with the "E11 France" for about a year before the E11 France was discontinued.
The E11 France was then replaced with the E12F. Same bore, but they now properly mount the posts, keywork & assembly is done in Germany (body is cut in France) and they are padded with leather pads.
I love the E12F when properly setup whereas I did not care for the E11 France. The leather pads made a very positive improvement to the performance of the instrument. However, the E12F take a lot of time in new setup to make them play up to their potential.
