 Own Up! Who Bought It?

If only I hadn't already bought the Masspacher C clarinet, I definitely would've bought this one as it already has the forked Eb/Bb mechanism on the top joint (a LH Ab/Eb lever can always be fitted).

Looks like a nice one and in excellent condition, so I do hope the buyer is pleased with it. If by chance it happens to be someone on here, then please let us know what it's like.

I've copied and attached a photo of it so you can still see what I'm on about once the listing gets deleted. Here's what the listing says about this clarinet:

"A UNIQUE AND RARE OPPORTUNITY TO AQUIRE A FULLY REFERBISHED EXTREMELY WELL MANUFACTURED SONOROUS HAWKES & SON CLARINET IN THE KEY OF C.

CAREFUL PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION OF THE CLARINET LEADS ME CONVINCED THE KEYWORK IS SOLID SILVER. WHEN MANUFACTURED IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A VERY EXPENSIVE INSTRUMENT IF THERE ARE ANY AFICIONADOS OUT THERE WHO CAN ENLIGHTEN ME FURTHER ON THESE PARTICULAR C CLARINETS I WOULD VERY MUCH APPRECIATE ANY INFORMATION.

THE WOOD IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, NO CRACKS, NO REPAIRS. THE CLARINET HAS HAD A FULL OVERHAUL WITH LEATHER PADS, NEW CORKS AND CRITICALLY ADUSTED, CLEANED AND OILED.

THE CLARINET IS IN FULL WORKING ORDER AND HAS A WONDERFUL TONE THROUGHOUT ITS FULL RANGE AND INCLUDES TWO BARRELS.

THE CLARINET IS AN EXCELLENT BUY OF A COLLECTOR, MUSEUM, ORCHESTRAL/BAND PLAYER AND ANYONE WHO WILL APPRECIATE THE QUALITY AND HISTORY OF THIS FINE CLARINET.

THE HAWKES & SON EXCELSIOR SONOROUS CLASS CLARINETS ARE VERY FINE LARGE-BORE ENGLISH INSTRUMENTS, THIS CLARINET IS NO EXCEPTION WITH ITS FANTASTIC OPEN SOUND. THE HAWKES & SON EXCELSIOR SONOROUS CLARINETS WERE THE TOP OF THE LINE INSTRUMENTS MADE IN ENGLAND FROM 1910 - 1930. FAMOUS UK PLAYERS SUCH AS CHARLES DRAPER, REGINALD KELL, FREDERICK THURSTON, ETC USED THE EXCELSIOR CLARINETS.

"Charles Draper had some involvement with Hawkes...he would go to Hawkes and test instruments for pro players and pupils of his, scratching an X on the back of the ones that he thought were of good quality."

THIS PARTICULAR C CLARINET HAS THE X 1 ABOVE THE THUMBPLATE WHICH INDICATES THIS IS A HIGHLY APPROVED, QUALITY INSTRUMENT.

I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS INSTRUMENT BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH A PETER EATON MOUTHPIECE OR A ENGLISH BORE MOUTHPIECE CONSISTENT WITH THE INSTRUMENT."

I was watching it, but fate intervened and my computer decided to have a couple of days off at the critical point. It did look nice, though.

Was considering that C. Was it bought or did the listing just finish?

The eBay page says it sold, at £595, or $957.

I recommended this one to a customer of mine (a 1010 player) who was looking for a C but don't know if they were the actual purchaser.

This C clarinet would also be perfect for anyone with a set of Louis Chas Draper models.

I was seriously considering it - especially at £595 which is a really good price for a pro level C clarinet, used or otherwise. A new Amati 200 series C clarinet is £845, Patricola C is £2750 and a Buffet RC Prestige C is £3510. I think the E11 C clarinet is around the £1100-1200 mark.

I didn't but I have a similar one; it is in fact the very last clarinet Hawkes & Son made before the merger with Boosey, in February 1931. It is a C, full Boehm, in cocus wood, not only matching serial number (15631) for the joint and the bell but on the mouthpiece too.

A full Boehm C clarinet - that's really what I'm after to complete the set!
In fact, this is the one: http://194.250.19.151/media/UEDIN/IMAGE/0036638d.jpg
I've only gone part way by adding the LH Ab/Eb lever and forked Eb/Bb mechanism to my otherwise standard 17/6 C clarinet making it an 18/7.

Interesting to see this Hawkes&Son C clarinet has a very similar design to the forked Eb/Bb mechanism that I've fitted (only the position of the adjusting screw is different) - this one is on my plastic Yamaha:

Here are a couple of diagrams to show how it works:

I was watching it with great interest too (I do have a pair of Louis, one of which is a Chas Draper) - but the relevant piggy bank had just been shaken out for a very interesting B&H pair from around 1937, with excellent provenance.

I rather hope Norman's customer was the purchaser - it would be nice to think of it homed with 1010s.

I saw it and I would have bought it too Chris if I had not not bought my Couseson C. It is lovely but I love my 1010s and my early Eatons :-)

Happy to report that this C clarinet is now paired up with the 1010s.
Apparently seems to work well with the 1010 mouthpiece too.

Excellent! Some may call it being nosey but it's always nice to know where and who these special instruments end up with.
