 Behn Mouthpieces

I just wanted to post a recommendation to try Brad Behn's mouthpieces - http://www.clarinetmouthpiece.com/. I have just started playing on an Artist Collection mouthpiece (Zinner blank) and find it to be of outstanding quality. The customer service is fantastic, too, and I was thrilled to find just what I was looking for in these mouthpieces. I have heard wonderful things about his other collections as well, particularly the Vintage, and I'm looking forward to trying those in the future.

I agree with Jason. Brad Behn's service is high quality, both his own mouthpieces and the refacing-customizing service too. You can't go wrong with his mouthpieces.

I'll chime in here too. Brad refaced a couple of vintage Selmer mouthpieces for me a couple of months back (a "Circle BG" and HS* oval), and the work was fantastic.

I play an unusual mouthpiece/reed setup, hold the horn at an angle similar to how Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman did for jazz, and have a sound concept resembling those old jazz players, rather than a classical approach. Brad was able to appreciate all of these concerns and meet my artistic needs on my terms, rather than by a pre-determined standard. It's extremely rare to find this open mindedness, let alone the skill to deliver the needed results.

Highly recommended.

Eric

Not for nothing but Jason is the new Principal Clarinetist of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. Bravo Jason!

Zinner blanks??? I thought Brad made his products from his own blanks made from material similar to original Chedeville mouthpieces.

In a non-related issue, one of my "pet peeves" is that if everyone is using blanks by Zinner, how dissimilar can their "custom" mouthpieces really be........

Behn's top end stuff is all proprietary rubber from his own blanks -- as you thought.

His middle tier products are Zinner blanks.

From my understanding, Zinner makes a number of blanks in different styles and some are custom made for particular mouthpiece makers. Even so, with the same blank, there are countless variations that a fine craftsman can make to facings and curves as well as modifications to rails, tip, baffle, bore, etc, that can make the same blank play very differently. Just because it says Zinner does not tell you much.
