 Clarinet Reeds/Whad'ya playing on?
Author: TAS
Date:   2013-10-23 18:38

I am a decades long user of Vandoren reeds. I am presently sing the V12 3.5+, but I also have had excellent results from the Gonzalez FOF 3.5.

What brand are you using? I am always interested in what other folks on this site prefer.

Just played my first concert on a Legere Signature after previous reluctance. I was so happy with the result that I think I'm ready to make the switch from cane.

Vandoren Rue Lepic usually, but I'm trying a box of Steuer classical at the moment. Despite the name, this is a French company I had never heard of before, and I'm very impressed with the quality and consistency. They are expensive, however.

I love the Gonzales FOF reeds and have been playing them for about a year. I get a lot more "good" ones from a box than I do with other brands. I just bought a box of Gonzales GD's, thanks to some BBoard postings. Can't wait to give them a try. When I need to buy just one reed because I'm in a jam and don't have time to properly break in a new reed, I buy a VanDoren and keep my fingers crossed. I'm usually fairly satisfied.

Vandoren 4. I'm thinking that the next box should maybe be 3.5, though; can't really say why. (am using VD 5RV Lyre and Not Lyre mouthpieces)

Currently playing Forestone reeds on all of my clarinets and saxophones. They let me play the music without having to play the reed first. Also Before all of this, I suffered for years with Vandoran V12's mostly, but also used Mitchell Lauri, Gonzales and others. FWIW, my mouthpiece has been a vintage "Chicago" Kaspar #14 since 1961, with a Charles
Bay "Ithica" custom on which Charlie copied my Kaspar facing. For jazz, I play on a Woodwind G8 mouthpiece customized by one of my former college clarinet professors, Dr Glenn Bowen.

Synthetic reeds are the reed of the future, and for me, that reed is Forestone.

Legere Quebec 3.75 (I like the Ontario and Signature Series too)
Cane reeds aren't playing well for me lately.

Mthpce: Wwind Co. B6 refaced by Kurtzweil
Ligature: Leatherature (Warren Cadwell) or any of the Rovners
Reeds: Legere 3.75 Quebec (Ontario or SS would be 2nd), Rue Lepic 3.5+ (had a horrible time getting cane reeds to work lately)
