 Grenadilla, NOT Granadilla!
Author: Chris P
Date:   2013-10-01 21:47

Why oh why oh why does grenadilla get changed to granadilla whenever I spell it as grenadilla and hit the space bar, or highlighted as a wrong spelling once I've gone back and had to correct it from granadilla back to grenadilla again?

Note to those at Microsoft, it's spelt GRENADILLA!

What's funny is when I spelt it with capital letters just then, it wasn't changed or highlighted as a wrong spelling with a wiggly red line under it! So why is grenadilla highlighted as being wrong and GRENADILLA (in capitals) completely going undetected?

Question: why, oh why?
Answer (you gave it yourself): Microsoft - The answer to the why of so many problems these days
Solution: turn off Spell-check/correction - an educated person such as yourself doesn't need it anyway

cheers

Although the narrowly correct answer is that someone entered the word incorrectly-spelled in the dictionary-DB that MS uses to check spelling.

In Word, type grenadilla (with no following space). Highlight it (double click). Invoke Spell Check (under the Review tab). Click on "Add to dictionary."

And never have that "correction" made again.

While I can understand woodwind mechanisms relatively easily, I'm completely lost when it comes to computers - quite simply I honestly don't know how to switch off this spell check thing.

I was recently using Firefox for a short while with the hope it was fast, but I soon found out it was painfully slow. So I went back to using Internet Explorer again but this time round it came with this spell check thing - sometimes it's a blessing but more often it's a curse.

Chris,
Follow this link, it details how to turn it off.

When I first started posting about the G wood on this BB (in the mid Triassic) I was roundly derided for spelling the first syllable with an "e"
I am now vindicated.

Nonetheless, It will take me a full galactic rotation to get people to realize that Grenadilla is NOT really African Blackwood.

Chris, by now you've probably seen Ken's suggestion. That's probably a better solution than turning spell check off completely. Sometimes, it's right.

Just add the correct spelling to the dictionary. Spell grenadilla, which will come up underlined in red (as it indeed does as I type it now) to show it's (supposedly) misspelled. Right-click on it (you don't have to highlight it, as Ken suggests, although it doesn't hurt to) and then click on "Add to dictionary" and it will never again be flagged as a misspelling.

Anytime a word is flagged (underlined in red) by spell check, if you right-click the word, you will get a menu that will include suggestions of "correct" spellings in addition to the alternative of adding your spelling to the dictionary. It can be a very useful tool as far as it goes.

Perhaps oddly, when I spell it as Granadilla or granadilla, my spell checker flags it anyway - someone at some point must have OK'd the misspelling on your computer somewhere back in history. My dictionary doesn't recognize anything similar.

Granadilla is the Passionflower fruit. Grenadilla is the wood. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granadilla.

This is but one of the extremely silly default Microsoft Word "Corrections," such as automatically changing cafe to café, and making numeric prefixes be № instead of No. The senile pedant who set up their autocorrect and spell checker functions must have used a 200-year-old style book.

The Microsoft default 'spell check' is the US of A spelling.
I often use the procedure that Ken Shaw has drawn attention to.
Just add it to the dictionary.
My favourite was color (US) CORRECTED to colour (UK)

Ok, let's see if that worked:

grenadilla grenadilla grenadilla grenadilla

Yep, that's done the trick!

Thanks everyone for the help with that - it's simple when you know how!

Chris - a better alternative to either Firefox (which I used to swear by) and Internet Explorer (which I will always swear at!) is Google Chrome. It's free and, IMHO, the best browser going.

For some reason, YouTube videos work much better and load faster on IE than they do on Chrome on my machine. I tried Firefox but it just got slower and slower to the point when nothing would happen.

I notice other people have had the same auto-correct problem with grenadilla. Why it wants to change it to grenadine or granadilla is anyone's guess.

Tonight on SyFy Grenadzilla vs. Granadzilla.

Amazingly no one started " that song" yet.
You know the one, Sam, play it..
Oh, let's call the whole thing off.

It's due to the Monte Carlo method that the search engine uses..
