Has anyone a wooden Bb plateau instrument they wish to sell? If so I would wish to hear from you as a pupil with large arthritic fingers requires one.

I wish I bought my sax teacher's plateau clarinets when I had the chance.
One was a Couenon but I can't remember what the other one was, probably Italian as it had pearl finger buttons on it.

An elderly tenor player in the big band I played in when I was 15 had a Buisson (Malerne) wooden plateau clarinet as well.

Having played an old Jaques Albert and more recently a plastic Vito, they do feel good under the fingers - like an oboe or cor anglais.

The opinions I express are my own.

Loeff & Pfeiffer quoted me a price of around $1400 to convert my R13 to plateau.

The plateau Vito 7214P may actually be available, probably by special order. http://www.amazon.com/Vito-7214P-Plateau-Clarinet-sup1/dp/B001NSR65K. It will play great with a hand-made mouthpiece and matching barrel.

There are a couple of places in France that sell all sorts of oddities (when they come in; you find them when you aren't looking) One is: La Cave à Vents in Paris.

Does it have to be made of wood? In the last year or two a couple of Normandy (same as Vito) plastic plateau clarinets have traded hands in the US (one of which I had acquired, restored and sold). I might even have another one like it at home, will check tonight. But definitely no wood ones.

I would be grateful if you did have a look David as I won't dismiss anything though am wary of the pricey Vitos.

"Pricey" Vitos? Never heard that before. They're dirt-cheap as used instruments over on this side of the pond. Personally I would never buy a new clarinet, nor a new car --- let someone else pay the 50% premium for the first week's depreciation!

Anyway, I went into the dungeon and sorry, no plateau clarinets. Not sure what made me think I still had one.

Aw, that would have made a nice ending to the story if David Spiegalthal had had a plateau clarinet he didn't want! Good luck finding one. Meanwhile, i totally agree with DS about 2nd hand clarinets, here in NZ they are all way undervalued- I just set a student up with a 2nd hand Nikkan (Yamaha stencil), completely overhauled, that was significantly better than the Leblanc Bliss my other student bought last year but for a quarter of the price.

I have a wood Normandy (by Leblanc) plateau clarinet in excellent condition. No chips or cracks. Needs to have the cork replaced on the bottom joint and some minor adjustment. Plays beautifully.

Send me a message if you would like to discuss it.

Thanks,

It's encouraging to read this exchange. I also agree with Dave.
