Lieutenant Kijé - tenor sax part
Author: GBK

Asking this question for a colleague -

Does anyone know if the tenor sax part for Lieutenant Kijé is written out in treble clef? I only have the concert score and the tenor sax part is notated in bass clef concert pitch.

I'm pretty sure it is - the excerpts I've seen in Paul Harvey's book are in treble clef.

Not sure why the tenor sax part has been omitted on IMSLP though.

I've played clarinet in Kije a couple of times and don't remember that it was an issue, so I'd guess the part was in treble clef or the tenor player would have pointed it out. Given that the entire score is in concert pitch (as Prokofiev's scores often are), I'm pretty certain the transposed part would be done at the standard 9th above, which would have to be done in treble clef - too high for bass. It would have been hard to write the tenor part at its real (concert) pitch in treble clef in the score - too low.

It's written out in the proper "up a 9th" transposition, at least the edition I played was. Apart from some fast tounging in the 4th movement, it's not a particularly difficult part.

The IMSLP set is also missing Oboe 1, Cornet, Tuba, Piano/Celesta, and Harp.

If you have the part, would you like to upload it?

Never heard of an orchestral sax tenor part being in the bass clef. Of course I play the bass clarinet parts.

It's bass clef in the score only. Remember that Prokofiev always wrote his scores in C and left it up to the publisher to determine the appropriate transposition.

For example, in his Symphony No.5, the English Horn is written in alto clef.

@GBK - if you are still looking for that Tenor part, let me know and I will scan it for you.

Yes, transposed in Treble Clef for Bb tenor sax.

In my community orchestra I've played the tenor sax part. I've only seen the music in treble clef. Our first clarinetist 10 years ago was a gentleman in his 80s. He told us during rehearsal that when he was in college his orchestra director was a friend of Prokofiev and had talked Prokofiev to write a part for tenor sax for Kije.
I blurted out , "Obviously Prokofiev never heard ME play tenor sax." ( SA little self-deprecating humor.)
