 Eb Clarinet - Yiddish Dances
Author: Jahrme

So I have been working on playing the Eb Clarinet part on Adam Gorb's Yiddish Dances, and other than the normal Eb challenges, I have been hitting road blocks as far as the gliss and bending goes for the Eb. If anyone could please give me some advice on how to make it sound better (right now they sound like a cat being stepped on) I would really appreciate it

Haha! I just recently performed this piece in Carnegie Hall with my Wind Symphony on a winds tour we did a year and a half ago. This is a piece you absolutely cannot take seriously (in context that is). Not that you shouldn't play it well, but we were able to play it so freely, especially since the third movement is a Doina. This in Klezmer (I'm not too good with my Klezmer nomenclature) features soloists in a very showy fashion. This solo is basically however you want to play it; a quasi cadenza persay. If the conductor is good, he will follow you!

On to the question you had - the glisses for this fly by pretty quick in the 1st movement. The way I like to describe glissing down is think with the back of your tongue the pronunciation "EEEEYYYAWWWW". E with a high back tongue position (don't close off the air stream) and then Yawww like you are "Yawwww"ning! One fluid "word". EEEYAWWW EEEYAWW EEEYAWWW. Hopefully you understand this. For the reverse - glissing up with a finger gliss you do YYYAAWWWWEEEEEEEEE. Hope this helps you. I put this in very amateur terms, but this is what works for me. Others will chime in for help as well. This piece was soooo much fun to perform. Have fun with it, and be free with your playing! Good luck!
