 Backun barrels bore information
Author: Vova Doob(UA)

Hi! I try to find some info about bore diameter of all backun barrels but results of my search is poor. I play Selmer Series 9 clarinet and I think that my Fatboy barrel has different bore than my clarinet.

Can someone give some advices or info on this topic.

Thank You

The bore mismatch means almost nothing. All that counts is intonation, tone and ease of playing. I have a number of barrels hand-made and adjusted to my clarinet by Kalmen Opperman, and none of them match up precisely with my mouthpiece or upper joint.

I would contact Backun about a barrel made specifically for your Series 9.

I have 3 different barrels Protege 66 grenadila, Fatboy 67 cocobolo and Clark W Fobes barrel 65mm, everyone of them has it`s own good and bad sides, but main problem is that when I use Fatboy, I need to blow more powerfully, It could be ok, but when I use another barrel I feel big difference blowing into the clarinet. So I try to find what is the reason.

Whenever I've tried barrels from any manufacture I'd measure the bores with my bore gauge and would notice that no two are ever excactly alike. Many may be close but the top end would be slightly larger on some or the bottom end slightly smaller or visa versa. Some would have a larger bore throughout and some smaller. Make sure you have the size you need for the best intonation and then try several. Example, on both my Buffets I use a 67 MM but on my Selmer Signature I use a 62.5. The clarinet bores are different enough that they require a different size barrel to play in tune. I tried many many barrels on all of them before choosing the one that plays the best on each of my three.

*bump*

I find it odd that barrels are sold without a specified bore size. It matters as much as length.

I have two of Backun's ringless barrels in front of me. They are both 65 mm long but one has a bore of (14.)99 to 91 mm and the other 87 to 70 mm. They will tune quite differently.

The last time I bought Backun barrels, he sent a dozen or so of different models and lengths for me to choose from. I measured them with a gauge and, like Ed and the others, found that they were all different. If Morrie Backun has some systematic way of varying the bore diameters, I don't know what it is, but there isn't one single set of measurements than describes his designs.

The instruction to the operators at the Backun factory: Do whatever you want!

I have asked their customer support about targets and tolerances for the different designs.kdk wrote:
