 Backun Alpha details / pictures?
Author: TheButler

Hi,

I'm looking for some details, reviews and detailed pictures of the Backun Alpha. I understand Backun are working on pictures, but since some people here already have this clarinet (any non-Backun artists?) maybe they can provide those and share their opinions. How do the keys compare to for example the Backun Protege keys or even the Ridenour Lyrique if you can compare?

I've been playing a Ridenour Lyrique Bb clarinet as my main clarinet since december 2006 (I'm an amateur), and I'm tempted to switch things up with the Alpha. I can't believe the Alpha is even cheaper then the Lyrique was back then.

Here are 3 high-res pictures I found, but I would love to see similar pictures from different angles, showing the thumbrest, thrill keys, etc.

Silver:

Thanks in advance,

Alpha keywork is really, really nice. Very, very high quality keywork. Quite ergonomic too.

I've got one with Silver Plated Keys, and love the craftsmanship.

I agree with David B. I have one with Black Nickel. Keywork is great feesl good.

For me intonation is good. tuning for me is good also, 66mm barrels, London Shavers Backun MP on Gonzales 2.5 reeds.

It is lightweight and great for outside. I actually carry mine in the fron pocket of my Bam Bass clarinet case. My alpha came with a pochette case. Works great for carrying to chrch services.

I am a supporter of Ridenour clarinets also (i play on both BBb and EEb contras and had his basset A for a while) but for the price of the backun you cannot go wrong. It is a well designed horn at a great price.

I am using both the factory bell and barrel and protege bells and barrels on the alpha also.

How about including the Ridenour Lyrique Libertas in the comparison? It is about 67 per cent more expensive than each of the others but I understand that the Ridenour 576 bc is due to be phased out.

Mr Ridenour

Please accept my apologies for stating that the 576bc is to be phased out.

Kessler & Sons Music - Have the Leblanc Bliss Clarinets Been Discontinued?

Leblanc Bliss Generation 2 models L310 and L320 are, in my humble opinion, fantastic instruments, beautifully assembled and finished. Confusingly and in my opinion incorrectly described as "student" models, they easily outplay many considerably more expensive "non-student" clarinets. Still available from some places.

There is a long story behind failed Leblanc & Morrie Backun collaboration which resulted in Backun Alpha release and some Leblanc model being discontinued, but this is different topic better left for some other time.

I don't know which Lyrique you play, but on the whole Ridenour Clarinets are professional models, while the Alpha is a high end student model.

The Alpha is made of a "special synthetic material chosen for its excellent sonic capabilities and exceptional tone." http://backunmusical.com/clarinets/alpha-bb-clarinets/ What is that? Is it dimentionally stable, does it crack, how does it machine, stand up over time?

Ridenour clarinets are, barring the Grenadilla model, made of tried to true hard rubber, known for dimentional stability, precision in craftsmanship, and longevity. The keywork is the strongest I've seen.

Tom Ridenour checks every clarinet that leaves his door. Does Morrie Backun?

Your meaning is that ridenour 576bc is a pro model, and backun alpha is a student hiend model. Thank you for reply. Please forgive my poor english.
