 New to Clarinets

Hi,
I have a friend who is selling an Elexus clarinet. It's about 8-9 years old. The selling price is $75. Her husband claims he paid $300 new. Is this a good instrument? Is this a good price? Would there be any issues that could come up from shipping it from Virginia to Louisiana?

TIA

It would help to know more - what type of person is this for? Student? Adult?

When first starting out, it would be best to start out with a known brand instrument, mouthpiece, ligature, etc. It would also be best to consult a local private teacher before jumping in.

I've never heard of that brand either. The market is flooded with low end imports, many of dubious quality.

If this is for a student who will be starting band this fall, ask the school's band director what they recommend. And its not too early to line up a private teacher for the fall semester.

Good luck.

A bit of research on the net reveals nothing about the Elexus other than that in 2003 there were some used ones for sale at around $30. It doesn't say a lot for a clarinet if nobody has ever heard of it and it sells for pocket change. I'd steer well clear of it. Shipping clarinets presents no problems as long as they are well packed.

Not to be confused with Alexus car. I strongly advise passing on this one.

A decent bargain price beginner horn would be a plastic Vito (decent design, decent pitch). These are around $350 new and $180 used. Don't experiment with anything less, you'd be wasting your money.
