 selmer is designing new clarinet
Author: noeasy

Hey clarinet folks. Yesterday leaked some information from my good friend, who has close connections with selmer, that they are designing new clarinet and probably soon it will come out. I didnt find any information about that, maybe some of you know more?

Could it possibly be a Reference 54 clarinet based on the Centered Tone?

This is interesting. The Privilege is still a fairly new model and as yet remains to be recognized for the strikingly good horn that it is.

Stephane Gentil of Selmer Paris mentioned that one can order a gold plated version of the Privilege direct from Selmer Paris, but I have as yet to get the exact figures on micron thickness and added cost.

Selmer is making some great clarinets. I really love the Signatures. I still think they are the flagship clarinets in terms of sound and intonation.

I agree about the Signature. My Bb is awsome.

Like other many models and makes, a few are of artist quality; most are average (what else?)

I played CT Omegas (Bb and A) in high school. The construction was bulletproof -- better than Buffet -- and the response was excellent. The A was particularly good, and I used it for many years.

However, I switched to (extensively tweaked) polycylindrical-bore R13s because they make it easier to get the tone and expression I want.

Selmer now has more models than I can keep straight. Some top players use them, and several more have let their names be used to endorse them. See for example http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=177442&t=177442. Ricardo Morales has switched horns frequently, and I think he played Recitals at least for a while in Philly, but he's always been with Backun.

If Selmer intends to bring back a CT clone, more power to them.

Seems a CT clone is a very popular choice of clarinet if they were to go ahead with it! Considering there's nothing on the market like them and so many seem to be hankering after a good one (and good condition originals are getting harder to find), then it could be a good move on their part to offer a large bore clarinet of this type.

Surely several good examples can be found and measured (unless they still have the original specs for them somewhere), then copies can be made.

I'd be shocked if they didn't still have all of the original design drawings. The biggest challenge would probably be resisting the urge to "fix" the design.

Interesting - I saw Stephane Gentil at the recent OU clarinet symposium. I mentioned the positive discussion concerning the CT that shows up on this website and suggested that Selmer produce a reference version of the CT. He laughed and thought it was a good idea. I wonder what reception the marketplace would give a big bore clarinet ?

Several years back now a Selmer agent said he liked the idea on here when I mentioned they ought to launch a Reference series clarinet seeing as they already have the Reference 36 and 54 saxes.

Considering the CT was the only model Selmer clarinet being produced for around 10 years, they ought to have a good following.

As there's no longer the Leblanc Dynamic H or Pete Fountain, nor are there any large bore Selmers, there's a gap in the market for French-style large bore clarinets (as opposed to English-style ones) - but so many players play it save and go for Buffets as they're infinitely more popular (but not necessarily the be all and end all).

This would be new privilege clarinet, so mechanics and bore are the same, with a slightly little changes. New design of course, they get rid of gold rings and put on carbon rings, and it has also some very fancy logo.

In other words, nothing to get excited about. Unfortunate.

Im not sure, if they will sell it for higher price as current privilege, but who knows.
They have some new technology of wood processing, would be interesting toy anyways :) .

For my money, one of the best clarinets on the market today.

Its now official, check the selmer homepage for video etc. www.selmer.fr . I tryed it already, people are buying it quite rapidly. Very nice horn, smooth mechanics, wonderful balance between registers, it seems also heavyer than last privilege.

They're using the MkVI (and later) crook key 'S' logo on the top joint.

I sat through the 3:40 video with mouth agape. I can't believe they'd risk screwing up a good thing. Of course I would like to try one out before getting all crazy, but why would they change the key work to something rather avant garde risking the alienation of clarinetists who are comfortable with your typical set-up. The new keys are reminiscent of the "Eddie Daniels" redesign of the Concerto...............anyone see one of those lately? And they took away the larger (avant garde?) "comfort octave key" that I rather liked.

I don't recall the older bore dimensions. I hope this isn't a change as well.

I hope they sound ok.

Adding a "comfort" extension to the register key is as simple as metalwork gets.

I love the way the original poster mentions his/her "Good friend, who has close connections with Selmer", but still has to ask US if we know anything.

Is it just me or do the RH pinky touches appear very Buffet-like on this clarinet?

Mind you, I'm not surprised considering Buffet have the lion's share of the market and all other makers have to do something to attempt to sway the general clarinet buying public.

Like what? The left pinky keys were the most different and even that is not very strange.

>> they took away the larger (avant garde?) "comfort octave key" that I rather liked. <<

A matter of preference. I've tried just about every "different" thumbrest on just about all models and still prefer the very regular shape which they also chose for this clarinet.

I am currently looking at an image of the New Privilege and an R13. The LH pinky keys on the Selmer have a decided curvature outward from the clarinet. On any other Buffet or Selmer these keys had a line that move parallel to the body of the clarinet. There is also a rather defined space between the alternate C# and the B keys. I do a a fair amount of sliding here (perhaps not typical) in returning scale passages. It does not appear that this architecture will help and in fact appears as if it will hurt this sliding.

I could get past the aesthetic changes (maybe) if it is indeed just window dressing. I just can't believe that Selmer actually thought they had something special if they could do that to this horn.

In a post titled "Buffet vs. Selmer", started on 10/29/2013, Ruben made the following comments about the Privilege:

" I am referring to the new Privilège by Selmer and not the one that has been around for a few years. For the sake of clarity, they should have called it "Privilège II" or something of the sort, but maybe they have. At any rate, it is a considerable improvement on the original Privilège."

Perhaps Ruben can share more insight on the changes as he obviously has played both models.

Ralph,
That thread was started by me! IMO Selmer is really improving great on their products. I have always loved the Recital. And when the Privilege(II) came out I have been recieving enthusiastic reviews of it.
And it looks like Selmer is developing an entire family of the Privilege line. I speculate that the new clarinet Selmer is developing is a Privilege Eb. Based on the success of their Privilege basses, and now the Privilege Bb is another triumph, the thing left is an Eb. Then Selmer would finally earn its crown as the dominator of the orchestra clarinet section.

It's so frustrating that professional flutes, saxophones, and even bassoons are available in a myriad of distinctly different configurations to suit the wishes of practically any player, yet the needs of clarinetists wishing for a large-bore French-style clarinet are ignored.

C'mon, Selmer, let's have another go at the CT--the music I play is best played on THAT kind of a clarinet, and not anyone's attempt to provide an alternative to the R13.

If Selmer don't get in there with a new CT-style clarinet, someone else will.

Yanagisawa have long been making saxes that Selmer should be making, so let's see who steps up to the mark and offers a clarinet Selmer should be making.
