I knew that Elsa Ludwig-Verdehr formed a trio with her husband (violin) and a pianist, but I never knew that the group made a concerted effort to commission new works for the this instrumentation.
Thanks to their performance/informational-presentation at the Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium I now know that the group has (so far) commissioned over 200 original compositions from many of today's compositional luminaries (and Pulitzer Prize winners) such as Peter Sculthorpe, Robert Mann, Gian Carlo Menotti and many, MANY others. There is also a film record of interviews with many of these composers in which they speak of their creative processes, challenges with this particular instrumentation, love of music and much much more (much of this available on line at their website http://www.verdehr.com/ ).
Just think about the invaluable contributions made to the repertoire by Benny Goodman's commissions: Bartok Contrasts, concertos by Copland, Hindemith and Milhaud. Today we probably could not even conceive of of a world without any one of these pieces. Elsa Ludwig-Verdehr and her trio have to this dated generated over 200 new works to the world of clarinet.
This is amazing !!!!
