I snore and before anyone tells me to lose weight, I already have and now weigh 158 lbs or only 13 lbs more than when I was a thin teenager. This snoring causes me to have less than perfect sleep and then I get tired a bit in the afternoon and need a short nap. I want to have an operation to reduce the size of the part of the throat that causes snoring.
Has anyone had the operation? Does it stop snoring and how long before I can play clarinet again? Does it affect clarinet technique?

Garth, you've probably tried a number of remedies, but with limited success.
I don't know much about surgical procedures for snoring, but there is a remedy that might be worth a try before you have surgery.
Are you familiar with singing as a remedy? Singing can help to strengthen throat muscles, and this might help your snoring problem. If you do a search for "singing to stop snoring," a number of articles come up. Here's a good one:

This has helped me, but snoring has a number of causes and singing might not help everyone.
Congratulations for losing weight! Best of luck to you.

Garth...Do yourself a favor. See your family doctor. He can advise what your best options are. Snoring can be a sign of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a condition where you stop breathing during the night. These episodes can last seconds to minutes. There are several treatments available, and surgery isn't necessarily your only option.

Decades ago, I was suggested to have surgery for a deviated septum. I declined and am so happy that I did not have it. I also declined surgery four years ago to replace an enlarged ascending aorta(48mm) and am delighted with my decision as it has not increased in size at all. A couple of other surgerys did not go very well and I regret having them.
Be so conservative about surgery and good luck!

Avoid surgery - have a sleep study, and get a CPAP if needed. That will nip snoring completely in the bud.
Operation has varying successes, but my Dad had the surgery, and from then on, he felt like he had a small pea in the back of his throat.
And it didn't fix his snoring!!
