My high school music teacher died
Author: Garth Libre
Date:   2013-05-20 01:24

Carolyn Hill who was our high school music teacher and orchestra leader has died. She worked with as much energy and dedication as I have ever seen any person display. Later she moved to another NYC school, the United Nations School, and then still later opened up her own art gallery. This eventually lead her to become the director of the Oklahoma Museum of art. She died at only 72 years of age, which is shocking as I now realize she was only 12 or 13 years older than the students she mentored.

The teachers that impart a love for the senses leave us with something that lasts over the decades and actually becomes part of us. She did a lot more than preparing us for SAT's and college entrance exams. She taught us how to enjoy being fully alive (through music). This is a skill I have incorporated into almost everything I do. Bless all the music teachers who bring heart and breath to their students. It's a shame that music departments are a disappearing remnant of bygone times. More and more we are entering an age of practicality without time for finer things like art that bring meaning to life.

I'll say nothing about my high school band director.

How fortunate you were to be in her orbit!
