 Neuranter reeds

I would like to buy Neuranter Bes clarinet reeds, but before that, I would like to know your impressions about it. Have you tried them? What strength did you use on which mouthpiece? Do you like them? Why or why not?

I'm looking for reeds with a rounder/warmer sound in the upper register and I'm playing V12 3.5+ on a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece.

Other suggestions are also welcome !

Thanks,
H.

hannelore -

By all means try Neuranter Bes reeds.

However, you will always sound like yourself, regardless of the reed or mouthpiece.

Go in a soundproof room and make as many sounds as you can think of, including really ugly ones. Imagine you're playing a trumpet, a kazoo or a giant truck exhaust. Hum like a mother to her baby. Scream for the police like you're being attacked.

Once you can do many things, bring the awful ones under control and make them sound beautiful. Variety is the spice of music.

Too me, the B45 is rather open. The 3.5 V12s are on the stiffer side.

I would strongly suggest that it is more a matter of technique that is in need of changing.

For one thing, you need to use UPPER lip muscles in particular when in the higher register to prevent the jaw from just being a clamp, sealing off the opening of the mouthpiece/reed system (also make sure you are using enough of your cheek muscles as well).

Once you have a LIP (or rather 'muscle') emphasized embouchure, you then need to make sure you generating enough air. One person just recently posted on the board that one should 'push from the core.' This could not be more important than in the third register. Also make sure your air stream is FOCUSED (pointed.....narrow and quick). You do this by making sure you are thinking the vowel sound "EEEEE" in your mouth.

Air and embouchure are key to a full sound.

Then I'd say, back off the "power" set up a bit ...... my guess is that it is fatiguing.

I've never heard of that brand, but I'm always willing to try a new reed!

The brand of reed players use is a personnal choice. The reason there are so many makes these days is that different players look for different tones, respones and feel. I've never tried this brand so I don't have an opinion. As far as the B45, some players sound great on them and others can't play it at all. Some players may use a #4 of a given brand and others may need a #2, it all depends of the player. There is no one strength that fits all. The old adage that a closed facings needs a hard reed and an medium opened facing needs a soft reed just doesn't fly these days because it just doesn't work for so many players. It just depends on the player and the mouthiece. The tip opening is only one figure in determing what strength any one player needs. I use Rico Thick Blanks and Reserves and I use #4 on an old Morgan MP that has a facing of about 118, I don't feel stressed at all. I believe the B45 is somewhere around there too.
