I just recently purchased a clarinet with "Eddie Kivlan" engraved on the bell and lower section of the horn. Does anybody know anything about this instrument ? Like the manufacturer or date of manufacturer or why it was named for Eddie Kivlan. The serial number is 4920C. I replaced a few pads on it and it sounds great ! The previous owner says it is from the 1940's and had it repadded 10 years ago but never played it. He is a saxophone man. He said the technician told him it was a pro level clarinet.

It has many of the characteristics of a pre-R13 Buffet, but it's not. The right-hand sliver key is different, as is the mounting of the tabs on the trill keys. I can't see whether it has the Buffet flat spring on the F#/C# right little finger key.
If it plays good, it IS good.

I found out Eddie Kivlan played for an orchestra in the thirties and may have even played with John Phillips Sousa for a time.
A stensil company must have used his notierity to produce some clarinets with his name on them.
I have a pre R13 Evette Schaeffer Master and it is a much heavier clarinet than this one. The Kivlan seems more compact than the Evette and has a plastic barrel and bell.
But you are right......if it sounds good and feels good, it is good !!!!
I love playing it.

According to Jesse Krebs' dissertation, The Clarinetists of
the John Philip Sousa Band: 1892-1931, Edwin G. Kivlan
was indeed a member of this band.

On page 20 of the dissertation, there is an ad for the GRAS
clarinet, so it's possible GRAS was the manufacturer. I also
recall hearing many years ago from a wonderful repairman
that many Sousa band members used Conn instruments,
which he claimed were outstanding at the time, so perhaps
it was made by them.

Thanks Clarinetguy for the info. 'Eddie Kivlan' is engraved just above serial number on lower section and just below the bell neck metal ring. Its hard to see in photos.
I too have since found some info on him. He was a indeed member of the John Phillips Sousa band per the FSU dissertation and the 1929 'Cities Service Gas/Oil Company Radio Orchestra' in Boston according to an antique Cities Service Oil Co poster sold on Ebay a while back .
So he very well could have endorsed a line of clarinets produced by Conn or Gras in the thirties or fourties.

My Eddie Kivlan clarinet seems to be a Buescher "True Tone" clarinet.
I compared my horn with the ones in the pictures at the links below.
Odd angled bridge key
No screw on A Flat/G# key
Similar case
Screws on thumb rest are positioned vertically as opposed to being horizontal
