Hi happy happy clarinet world!!

My name is Sam, I am a clarinetist studying in Philadelphia! As a suggested addition to an application I am submitting for an artist management program, I have made a youtube channel! It was suggested to me that this might be a good place to get it 'out there'... I will continue to upload more performances I have given/will give in the future. If it strikes your interest you can subscribe to keep current with any playing I do!

Here is the first installment of videos Ive uploaded! This is a performance of the greatest clarinet concerto out there with a great chamber orchestra of many of my good friends and classmates! Enjoy!!

Very nice playing, though I wonder why you need a conductor for such a small ensemble. More fitting to have directed the group as well as being the soloist.

Peter,

Volumes could be written about conducting (volumes more than what already has been written that is). It is not about cuing tempi as much as it is about having a unified vision and then making sure that is what you get from the group. There are conductorless groups such as the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra which do amazing things. But be sure that there are grueling rehearsals with a strong minded concert master prior to performance. On the other side I've seen wind octets conducted by the likes of Bernard Haitink.

I for one would not want to be a soloist going into a rehearsal as conductor too unless that was the whole point, such as Bernstein conducting from the keyboard.

Hi!

That idea is something that I had thought of, and have done before, actually. However, due to the very busy schedule we have at Curtis, we were only able to have one rehearsal. So, I thought it might be better just to get a conductor to help facilitate things.

Incidentally, performing this concerto without a conductor is actually something that is quite an endeavor- on the soloist and the orchestra. In comparison to other mozart concertos , the clarinet concerto is definitely the most complicated. Its alot like the late piano concertos, particularly the D minor, or the A major concerto, which are both also quite elaborate.

No offence Paul but I don't need to be lectured by you regarding directing ensembles, I have quite a bit of experience and I have actually directed and performed the Mozart Concerto.

I would also wonder if having a Director was also an assigned part for a Conductor to get more performing experience.

Was it entirely your call Sam?

Dave,

Actually you're right! In order to have that performance I had to get one of our two student conductors to lead the group. The student recital programmers actually do several of these concertos with a mini orchestra each semester. Early next semester Ill be doing the strauss concertino actually!
