 VD B44
Author: Bill G

I am currently using a Vandoren B44, which I bought used, and found that it suited my embouchurel. That model has been discontinued. I would like any information available as to the following:

1. How would that facing most closely compare to a current facing?
2. What were the nominal specs given by VD, and what description of the
characteristics?
3 If you actually used one, how did you like it?
4 Why do you suppose VD discontinued that model?

On searching the board, the B44 had a 1.105 tip opening and a 19.0 facing length.

Probably a 5RV [Lyre] would be the closest "facing", however, since I've never played played a B44 (Bb), I'm not sure what the closest would be WRT resistance, response, sound, feel, etc. I have an Eb B44 and it doesn't work for me.

I used a B44 until a couple of years ago. I found that a 2RV was close enough to use as a substitute.

Which is, I think, also out of production but supposedly (according to Vandoren) identical to the still produced 5RV?

I believe that is so.

Touche, Bob. I realize that my use of the word "facing" was inappropriate, but I am still confused. If the B44 had a 1.105 tip opening i t seems highly unlikely that a 5JB, which is stated elsewhere to have 1.47 tip opening, could be similar as the other postings suggest. Could difference in facing length or curve accommodate such a difference in tip opening and and both mouthpieces still be marketable?

The other postings refer to the 5RV, not the 5JB.
