I don't play the clarinet because its the best one in all the instruments, but because I have more experience on it than any other since I picked it up when I was nine. I consider myself a musician first and clarinet is my way of being a musician. It has been a frustrating journey when you look at reeds and mouthpieces and maintenance. How easier it would be to have a keyboard plugged in to play music? I like the sound better than the flute and sax, but I still like the others. So what I'm saying is that the clarinet is not the ends but is the means to the ends.

Interesting.

I believe even we fanatical clarinet enthusiasts would agree with that basic premise, though you must also be patient with our camp. There was a similar story told of a meeting between Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman long after the heights of their respective careers. Benny started asking Artie about his thoughts on Reginald Kell's sound. Artie got a little bent out of shape said something to the affect that this was Benny's problem, he was obsessed with the clarinet, not music itself.

I think it's ok to be in love with the sound of a particular instrument. It should make us eternal students of that instrument's sound. Now how can that be a bad thing?

Keyboard...hmmmm...I play keyboard. It's not the same. It's just different.

Think of the color, tone, timbre, pitch...each different, each time. Your entire body produces the sound; a change in the lip muscle, speed of the air, shape of your mouth makes that note yours and yours alone.

"One cannot step in the same running stream twice..." (paraphrase of a Buddhist saying)
