That is the second Buffet performing artist that I noticed has left if in fact that is true.

Jon Manasse is one of my favorite clarinetists: gorgeous sound and impeccable technique.
I don't know what he played years ago (other than a crystal mouthpiece that predates his involvement in the development of the Vandoren M30), but the pictures I've seen in recent years show him playing a Tosca.

I met Jon Manasse several year ago at the late lamented WoodWind & BrassWind store in New York City. François Kloc had brought about a dozen of various Buffet models, and Jon picked out three Greenline Festivals for his Eastman students. I played a really good Leblanc Concerto there that day, but the Festivals beat it.
Of course, François had hand-picked the clarinets, probably knowing that Jon would be there, so they were not run-of-the-mill average in fit and finish, intonation or playing qualities.
About 4 years ago, Kal Opperman told me that Manasse played very fine Buffets. Since then, I don't know. He has certainly changed equipment over the years, e.g. from a crystal to a hard rubber mouthpiece. At least it's not Ricardo Morales, who seems to have a new clarinet every few months.
This is pure speculation, but it may be that Buffet is slowly letting the Performing Artist program die, due to losses of sales caused by the criminally stupid abandonment of music programs in U.S. K-12 schools.

The last time I saw him perform (last year) he was using a Tosca.

As an aside, what are the benefits of the "Performing Artist Program" from the point of view of a professional player? Do you get free swag if you agree to use only Buffet clarinets or something like that?

Awesome - thanks for all the great info!
It sounds like it's Tosca for him and Festivals for his students?
According to Wikipedia, the Festival is an R-13 bore:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffet_Crampon
And although Wikipedia seems to disagree, Buffet says that the Tosca is essentially an R-13 bore: "Whereas the Tosca clarinet was the R13 bores' top range model, the Divine features the Buffet Crampon RC bores' latest evolution."
Has anyone ever heard Manasse comment on R-13 versus RC?
Thanks again!

Most of his students that I know play Tosca's.
With regard to R13 versus RC, I believe that I have heard him say that the Vito Dazzler far surpass both of these instruments. Perhaps you should try out an R13, RC, and a Dazzler and report your findings. Be sure to get the pink model- they really help you achieve that nice dark sound!

I think it's evolved into a real source, but the quality of Wikipedia stories varies a great deal. It's wise to be wary. In doing research for the two magazines where I'm a staff writer, I look at the Wikipedia articles because they often bring up points that hadn't occurred to me and they're a trove of links to other sources, but I've never failed to find at least one factual error (at least, something *I* consider a factual error!) in every Wikipedia story I've read about a topic I've researched extensively.
Any time the subject is a person, the hagiographers on one side and the "Pfui!" crowd on the other trade rival editing back and forth. In the case of political or otherwise controversial stories, such as anything to do with media censorship in modern China, the so-called facts can change literally from day to day (in that case, with mainland Chinese editors on one side and Taiwanese on the other, as people from the U.S.A. and both Koreas jump in, too). Buyer beware.

Lelia -
The openness of the internet, and Wikipedia in particular, has led to pitched battles between the forces good and evil. Just last week, when the spam exposure site Spamhaus named a notorious spam host, the spammer tried to shut down Spamhaus and even attacked the internet central servers, slowing access for the whole world. It was as if North Korea backed up its infantile threats with actual weapons that could attack anywhere in the world.
The same thing happens in Wikipedia. When they published a meticulously sourced article on the health quack and charlatan Gary Null, Null "edited" the article to remove its criticisms and added material praising himself. It led to a rare freeze by Wikipedia, preventing any editing without editorial approval.
I fear that the Spamhaus incident will lead to ham-handed efforts to protect the world by suffocating the goose that lays the golden eggs (a triple mixed metaphor!).
Revenons à nos moutons. My sighting of Jon Manasse picking out Greenline Festivals for his students happened ten years ago (or longer). I'd be interested in knowing which model he actually plays today and, equally important, who set up the instruments for him and his students.

I know someone who studies semi-regularly with Manasse; as recently as a month and a half ago, it was still Tosca. Who did the setup/maintains his instruments is an interesting question, though--I'll have to check with my source & see what the inside dope is!

I'm always interested in what someone else is using for equipement, but what is most important in the end is that which works best for me. Maybe it's time to revive the "what are you playing" thread--not just the Ricardo's of the world, but simply little ole you and me. You can go first..........

I'm not a big fan of those type of threads as it encourages "herd mentality". How many threads have we had here in the last few years where players looking to upgrade have started the thread out by stating that they are only interested in a certain brand or even a certain model with no justification other than that they have heard that "everyone else uses it"?

Back on topic: I have heard from an unimpeachable source that Jon Manasse is now playing First Act clarinets exclusively.

Boy, I tell you what - reading back over some of these replies is reminding me just much I used to loathe and despise a certain Greater NYC contingent which deludes itself into believing that it can play the clarinet worth a d@mn.
Y'all certainly haven't changed a bit since I was a boy.
Heartful thanks, though, to everyone who gave sincere replies.

Who cares?
I always find it interesting that everyone sitting in the bleachers wants to comment while the Hitters never are on board since they are so busy performing and practicing.
I love JM's playing (and Ricardo's) but I've never seen either post anything on the Clarinet BBoard.
