Bradford Behn recently refaced my old Chedeville. He did an wonderful work. The mouthpiece has a beautiful sound. He also fixed my tarogato mouthpiece.
I am very happy with his work.

Is there a reference work anywhere to teach us what effect the various reworks on a mouthpiece are for? Like, what happens to the tone when you narrow the tip rail and what happens when you have a longer facing or a shorter facing and what the different air volumes provide and what makes a mouthpiece feel 'stuffy' and what makes it blow 'free' and what does altering the side rails actually do?
Has anyone ever put together a compendium of what affect these changes have on the sound that is produced?

Certainly the mouthpiece craftsmen can offer lots on the subject. In my experience, the facing is only one element. The bore, baffle, chamber, curve, etc all have great influence on feel and playability. I have played a number of mouthpieces that feel quite different than what the facing dimensions would suggest, due to other factors.

Lee Gibson provides a sampling of mouthpiece dimensions without demonstrating much knowledge of what they mean, IMO. There are better sources.

Ditto David S.'s comments about Lee Gibson. Read that book two or three times and (almost) everything I've learned empirically contradicts it.

I haven't read Gibson's book, but I'm interested to know what some of the better sources are. There's so much nonsense broadcast about mouthpiece mechanics that I'd really like to read something based on real information.
