Zoom Barrels by Paulus & Schuler

I know there have been a few posts starting about three years ago in regards to these barrels. A lot of the top German/Austrian players are now using them.

Is anyone in the states playing on them?

From the previous strings: German barrels are cylindrical and can thus be lengthened or shortened without disturbing the shape of the bore. Almost all players of French instruments use barrels with a reverse cylindrical bore, and any adjustable barrel changes the taper.

I've tried a bunch of adjustable barrels on my R13 and never played one that was even remotely acceptable in intonation, tone or response.

Of course YRMV.

Just for balance:

'Nope':

Pascual Martinez-Forteza, NY Phil, according to the P&S website.

'I ordered one and never got it':

P&S were out of stock a year or so ago and I had to follow up an order that I'd made at that time.
I've had P&S barrels on approval on two occasions, each time I paid only after I'd made my selection. I found Henry Paulus very good to deal with.

(I have no affiliation with P&S, other than being a happy customer)

James,

I'm the US Dstributor. Send me an email if you are interested in trying some. I just sent 20 to Cohen to try at NU.
They are all Tosca and R13 bores. I will see Henry Paulus on the 9th and ask for him to make some Yamaha Zooms.

A few of us in the military bands are playing them. Eugene Mondie in the NSO is playing them. Many Europeans are as well.

JB -

Do the Zoom barrels for Boehm clarinets have a Moennig reverse taper bore?

Ken,

Whatever the zoom wheel does, it can't be worse than pulling the barrel and leaving a gap at the tenon joint when it comes to changing the bore shape (and air seal)...

Ken,

The tapers have been many and varied so far. I have a few coming that will be left too small so that we can actually put a true Moennig taper in them. More to come on that.

After measuring my favorites for my Toscas and my colleagues favorites...they don't share any consistent dimensions for the Toscas. It's really horn specific. You either like one or hate one...a larger selection to choose from would be desired.
