Dear Friends,
My name is Paul Taylor Sinclair and I am a Clarinet Performance student at UC Irvine. Recently I was flying from Michigan to Los Angeles and was required to check my Eb. In the process the clarinet was broken and the bell lost. It is an old Selmer Eb from the 80's and is wooden. I was going to try and buy a new Selmer bell, but they are $600. I was wondering if anyone had any advice besides trying to get money from the airline company. We have already tried this. It would be great if someone had the right bell for sale!

If the airline company was responsible then they should be charged for the damage and loss.
Keep an eye on eBay as you sometimes find Selmer Eb parts listed on there.

You could honestly buy a studio bell from Backun for a lot less than $600 (and a brand new one for only $625!) There are usually some on eBay for less than both prices also. I honestly am angry for you if the airline won't pay for the damages!

Anybody who suffers such a loss has every right to be furious -- whether the airline tries to weasel out of compensating or not. Given the long lines, the hassles and the prices we pay for tickets to sit packed in like olives in a jar, the airlines could manage not to destroy our possessions.

Most definitely try a Backun Cocobolo, Tulipwood, or Grenadilla wood bell. I use a Backun Cocobolo barrel and a Cocobolo Bell. They are phenomenal. Not to pricey either. Check them out on eBay or contact John Parrette Jparrette@gmail.com of Clarion Musical, He sells Backun products and much more. He sells them at an extremely reasonable price. I use Backun products for my Bb (Buffet) and Eb (Leblanc Noblet) clarinet.

If you decide to go the Backun route on eBay, I recommend you contact Morrie Backun or John Parette first to make sure you buy the right bell. Backun makes two versions; one for Buffet, Leblanc and Yamaha clarinets and one for Selmer clarinets. If memory serves, the difference is in the diameter and depth of the tenon socket. Your clarinet may be old enough, however, that it would actually take the Buffet/Leblanc/Yamaha bell.
