 Fobes

I ordered a Clark Fobes "Debut" mpc. The very next day (yes), my sister-in-law in TX informed me she had ordered one for my nephew, on his friends' advice. This is spooky.

Still playing with reeds and trying to determine if there is a place for this choice. But it is really bright for me, enough that the lower register is a chore.

For folks who play on one regularly, is it your regular mpc, or only for specific occasions?

What brand and strength reeds to you use?

And, IYHO how will other Fobes mpcs compare with the Debut?

Thanks

I find the Debut to be a great player. I often use one when playing with students. You might try a stiffer reed. It will be personal, but a #4 Reserve Classic or V12 works for me. From my experiences, the Fobes mouthpieces have a nice resonance and responsiveness. To me, the Fobes San Francisco mouthpieces have more depth in the sound.

It's my regular and I play it with Mitchell Lurie 3.5 reeds, for both classic and modern pieces.

I have students who use Debuts, and they're nice mouthpieces. A variety of reeds seem to work well with them. A student of mine got nice results with 2 1/2 Reserves, but I'd imagine that harder Reserves and Reserve Classics would also work well.

I often use the saxophone version on my alto, and it is one outstanding sax mouthpiece!

I have been using 3 Vandoren or Rico Grand Concert variants on a Vandoren M13.

Got a couple of boxes of Vandoren 3.5's and they seem to work on the Debut.

It will be a couple of weeks before the planing schedule ramps up again and we see how it works. The first benefit though seems to be quicker response.

Clark has done us all of us who teach young students a great service in developing this mouthpiece.
