I don't give my private students even small token gifts for the holiday. When I taught school, I gave out small candy canes at the last lesson before the Christmas break, but nothing more than that. And over my last 2 or 3 years the school district started getting "healthy" on us and discouraged giving out any sort of candy for any purpose.
I think my wife used to sometimes order pencils engraved with "Season's Greetings <school name> Orchestra" or something similar. If you're talking about private students, you wouldn't necessarily have to be as P.C. about whether to invoke Christmas or Holiday Season.

Giving gifts seems to me to be a purely personal matter. The season is about warmth, charity, and acceptance. Let your personality be your guide. Merry Christmas.

When I was still teaching, I used to give a free reed to each of my band woodwind players. But in present economic times, school budgets and personal pocket books may not find such generousity possible. I think the best gift you can give is the joy of music--make playing all the fun you can. Even if the lesson is not perfect, find something good to say and try not to be constantly negative. This advice is good for the entire year, not just Christmas. Happy Holiday's.

In the past when I had more time I would burn a cd for my private students of clarinetists' work I admire. Haven't had the time or the $ for blank cds the last several years though...

Yep, the STUDENT gives the TEACHER a present... of course if you really want to go the extra mile you can give them something- some extra scales, or a "fun piece", or something extra hard to give them an impression of what you hope they'll achieve in the new year (here the xmas/new year holidays are also the summer holidays so there's 2 months with no lesson)

i ended up getting peanut butter cup stuffed cookies and peppermint patty stuffed cookies and gave one to each.
and yes - i did get a couple gifts too. kids are so darn cute. lol (2 of my students are twins) it was just so cute both of them holding the gift and saying happy holiday together.

Sounds like a nice solution. Just be careful with peanut products - there are more kids than you might suspect with peanut allergies.
