Poor Mark Nuccio! He's like Captain Dobbin in Vanity Fair, perfectly qualified and doing a superlative job, yet everyone takes him for granted. Not to mention that unlike so many top players, he hasn't done a Magic Jumping Bean act.

Being qualified and sticking around doesn't make anyone entitled to the principal chair in a major orchestra. Before anyone feels sorry for Mark Nuccio, it might help to remember that he is compensated very well, has played principal countless times and is a prolific teacher in NYC.

Also, just because he didn't jump to other orchestras or jobs does not mean he didn't try.

As reported on ClarinetJobs on Facebook just a few minutes ago:

Steve Williamson, principal clarinetist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, has been offered the same position with the New York Philharmonic after an audition and trial with the orchestra.
