 Purchasing a new clarinet
Author: Tom Braunreiter

I would like to upgrade to a new clarinet. Can you suggest stores in the Milwaukee and Chicago areas, where I can call ahead and ask them if they could put out 2 Selmer clarinets of the same make, or two Buffet prestige clarinets - and let me go off to a room to play them to see which I liked best.
I give those names only as examples. Thanks for the help.

Call Buffet in Florida. There are a few top symphony players that go to Buffet and pick out the best horns.

Then you pay the symphony pro a few bucks, I think it's around $200 and they will get you the top horns delivered to wherever you wish. These are the very best horns.

Maybe someone can pop in and give the names of these selected and very skillful players. I think one on them is in Bostom.

A and Bb r13's new.
Bb r13 1963 backup
Vandoren 56
Ciaccia custom mouthpiece
1.07mm facing amazing mouthpiece
2 Kaspers as spares

In Chicago you might try contacting:

http://www.clarinetxpress.com/

Search this board for "Walter Grabner" (without the quotes) for reviews and comments about his service.

http://www.lisasclarinetshop.com/

Run separate searches on this board for "Lisa Argiris" and "Lisa Canning" (without the quotes) for comments and reviews about her service.

Best regards,
jnk

Walter Grabner and Lisa Canning are good options but only if you are only interested in Buffet clarinets. As far as I know neither of them carry any other make.

Personally, I find that it is time to break the Buffet monopoly. There are other small makers, one of which I work for. Far fewer people play the bassoon than the clarinet, yet there are all sorts of bassoon makers (besides the legendary and astronomically-priced Heckel). We clarinetists tend to be too conformist.

For the record, I am very happy with my Hanson clarinet...
