 Outside the box players

My son is a clarinet player that loves that groups like Trans Siberian Orchestra have done with traditional classical instrumentation and I was wondering if there are any clarinetists out there that have done something similar. I understand that typically the outside box for a classical clarinetist is probably something as simple as jazz or indie, but have there been any clarinet players that have experimented in the metal/rock arena? It would be really cool if I could prove to him, since I know it's true, that clarinet isn't limited to just classical and jazz. Thanks for any help.

Here's some of my loud stuff...

I also briefly fronted a metal band, though we disbanded after a couple shows and our only recordings are a bit sketch.

This February I toured a bit with a drone/doom tuba duo. Among other things, we played a slow, doomy, very minor cover of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You", as she had just passed.

Maybe something like this:

Here's the same guy with his bass clarinet quartet covering Iron Maiden.

They have other covers too.

Evan Ziporyn who plays with the Bang on a Can All Stars is pretty out there. I saw them play in Glasgow about a year ago - they were fantastic, an Evan did a complete rock-out improv solo on bass clarinet which was something else!

An example of them:

I'm not sure if it's outside the box or not. Maybe it is for clarinet players. Here is the setup from my last concert, which is minimal compared with the usual setup. What you don't see is that both a bass clarinet and a phone are connected to the pedals.

Thank you for all of the responses. These are quite cool. It's interesting that bass clarinet seems to be the instrument of choice for these groups. The electric pickup for it is really neat. What an amazing way to open up options for the instrument. Are there similar kits for (forgive my ignorant statement) standard clarinets?

I use the pickup and everything else on both clarinet and bass clarinet.

I stick a piezo film under the reed. It ain't perfect, has some issues, and deteriorates over time. But it works well enough, as long as I have a spare.
